Justice for Girls
Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC)Women's Initiative
Life is a Journey that deserves to be traveled with dignity and honor. The trafficking of girls robs them of a chance to choose part of their journey. We are taught "our past does not determine our future,"therefore, with education and activism we have the ability to change the journey of many young girls who might otherwise be forced into a life of trading sex for money.
Justice for Girls is a Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC)Initiative developed as an educational awareness project aimed at highlighting the growing sex trafficking problem in our communities.
In August 2009, the Interfaith Children's Movement report revealed the FBI determined in the U.S., "the sexual exploitation of children has become the third largest moneymaker for organized crime." The US Department of State Trafficking In Persons Report June 2012 showed "trafficking in persons can occur in brothels, massage parlors, street prostitution, hotel services etc." According to the u.s. Department of State, "almost 300,000 American children are at risk for trafficking into the sex industry." The U.S. Department of Justice reports that "girls as young as 5 and 6 years are forced to do sexual acts for economic gains by their pimps." 797,500 children under 18 were reported missing in a one year period, while research shows that these numbers average 2,185 children reported missing each day. Such reports and research reveal the magnitude of the very real and relevant human trafficking crisis impacting girls and women within and beyond our country.
Purpose: “Justice for Girls” seeks to heighten awareness of sex trafficking within our communities, using education to empower individuals and groups to actively work to eradicate this public safety and community health issue.
Goals: Through seminars, workshops, public forums, round-table discussions, and partnerships with other organizations, SCLC will educate and increase awareness of sex trafficking of children in the United
States.
Our plans include:
• Identifying and sharing information on how to recognize sex trafficking victims
• Increasing knowledge on why and how girls become sex trafficking victims
• Educating communities on action steps to take when one suspects a child is a victim
• Educating communities on ways to avoid criminalizing victims
• Educating communities on identifying where trafficking crimes occur in neighborhoods• Providing trainer programs within communities to increase leadership around the issue
• Partnerships: SCLC will form partnerships with corporations, churches, local, state and national
organizations to achieve the outlined goals of the initiative.
